Poppies, pins, and red, white, and blue paraphernalia were on display Thursday as a veterans recognition ceremony was held at Dunlop House. This is the first time the ceremony was held at the senior living community. A few hundred braved the cold air during Saturday afternoon’s Veterans Day event, “Saluting Chesterfield County Veterans of all U.S. Wars,” sponsored by the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia held on the lawn of the Historic 1917 Courthouse. A march of veterans, with the walkway lined by soldiers the 266th Quartermaster Battalion from Fort Lee in salute, was led by Master Sgt. John J. Nichols, WWII Buffalo Soldier and member of the 9th and 10th Horse Cavalry Association. A guest speaker during Bensley’s 22nd annual Veterans Day ceremony, Ret. Army 2nd Lt. James “Jimmy” Boehling gave a detailed account of an April 21, 1945 bombing mission he was on where the plane stalled and went down. Boehling alerted others on the crew, made a split decision to grab a parachute, and jumped out head-first. His face was burned by the slipstream, and he had forgotten to latch one side of the parachute. Luckily, while spiraling downward from 27,000 feet, he was able to latch and deploy it. The Kiwanis Christmas parade is CANCELLED. This year’s parade theme is “Parade of the Christmas Toys.” Dickie King as our Grand Marshal. West Hundred Road between the Chester YMCA and Harrowgate Road will close starting at 1:45 p.m. Sunday. In collaboration with Capital Ale House, the Henricus Foundation presents the third annual Hops in the Park festival at Henricus Historical Park on Nov.11 from Noon to 6 p.m. This one-of-a-kind premiere harvest festival features Virginia craft beer, Virginia hops farmers, a Virginia farmer’s market, and of course, Virginia history. The Chester Kiwanis Club is making preparations for the 2017 Chester Kiwanis Christmas Parade. This year’s parade theme is “Parade of the Christmas Toys.” The parade will take place Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. It will begin at the Chester YMCA and end at Harrowgate Road. Entrants that wish to compete for trophies should express their group’s idea of the theme. Deadline for entries is Dec. 1. Entry fee for participants is $40 if postmarked by Nov. 1. The Richmond Railroad Museum is celebrating the first-ever Richmond Train Day 2017. On Saturday, Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the museum will be surrounded by a one-of-a-kind locomotive bounce house, exciting kiddie train rides, food vendors, and live entertainment. Kids of all ages are invited to experience Richmond’s railroad history inside and outside the museum.
