A MESSAGE FROM CHESTER CLERGY: We, “the Chester Clergy,” as servants of Jesus Christ and His Church, join with our community and world in support of racial equality for which Jesus lived out, taught and required of those who follow Him.  As the Bible declares that all people are created in the image of God and loved by Him equally, we lend our voices to collaborate with the voices of men and women from all ethnic groups, genders, faiths, and beliefs that racism is a deadly disease in our community that must be eradicated. We are committed to seek out…

Haley asks for audit for alleged bullying of teachers The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors had plenty of questions for school superintendent Merv Daugherty on July 22 after the school board voted 4-1 for a virtual reopening of schools on Sept. 8 and 9. Daugherty noted that the county’s health officer, Alexander Samuel, projected that a spike in coronavirus cases will occur in September. Daugherty said he didn’t want to reopen schools and then have to close them and go to 100-percent virtual learning. During his presentation to the school board on July 20, deputy superintendent Thomas Taylor said some $15…

Chesterfield votes to go with virtual school opening  By a 4-1 vote on July 20, the Chesterfield County Public Schools board decided school instruction will be virtual for the start of the school year on Sept. 8 and 9.  The vote could be considered a win for the Chesterfield Education Association, which lobbied for the move.  Parents of students, however, came up short as a survey the district conducted showed that 82 percent preferred at least some instruction in a face-to-face setting. Deputy superintendent Thomas Taylor briefed the school board prior to the vote, noting the survey got 13,006 responses…

Pocahontas State Park volunteers received a big lift from outdoor retailer REI, this time in the form of a large trailer intended to support those building and maintaining trails at the park. These donations come on the heels of the $20,000 REI Richmond provided to Friends of Pocahontas State Park in 2018. Those funds were used to help establish the Co-Op Trail, which opened in 2019 and is now the most popular hiking trail…

Stubbs relates that when the German officer in charge spotted them, he responded pretty well, too. “He didn’t think it was very funny and reprimanded us, saying, ‘This is not how we treat our prisoners.’ …
