Joan C. Girone and Lane B. Ramsey were recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards from Chesterfield County during the county’s Investiture of Elected Officials last month. Joan Girone, an outspoken advocate for regional cooperation, marked a milestone for Chesterfield County when, in 1976, she became the first woman to serve on the Board of Supervisors. She would serve three terms before retiring from the board in 1987, having served as vice chairman from 1976 through 1980. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will present a lecture at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 30 at the County Museum, 6813 Mimms Loop, in Chesterfield. Ryan O’Hallahan, Chesterfield County Museum staff member and graduate history student at Virginia Commonwealth University, will discuss the experiences of women during the Civil War. The Woman’s Club of Chester invites all youth, 12 through 14 years of age, to submit an original 250-word essay on the subject “What It Means To Me To Be An American Citizen.” The essay should include the feelings and beliefs of the writer. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) presented its ninth annual “Winter Lecture Series” in Chesterfield on January 8. The series continues every second Friday through March 18, 2016. Each lecture begins at 7 p.m. On January 22, Sean Edwards, historic interpreter at Henricus Historical Park will discuss “Virginia Indians’ Reaction to Colonial Contact.” The third lecture, on February 5, entitled, “The Many Faces of Van Lew,” will discuss Richmond abolitionist, philanthropist and spy Elizabeth Van Lew. Local resident, Linda Bowling, and her classmates are very passionate about extending an invitation to the community to learn American Sign Language (ASL) and about the deaf culture. “It is free,” she said. “The knowledge we are gaining from the class is helping us to close the gap between the hearing and non-hearing cultures. To see a hearing impaired person’s expression of happiness when a hearing person communicates with them is rewarding.” American Sign Language classes are being offered at the Appomattox Regional Library in Hopewell. RICHMOND – The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is now registering customers for the commonwealth’s Emergency Contact Program. The Emergency Contact Program, which was authorized by the General Assembly in 2015, gives law enforcement a way to notify a participant’s family or friends in the event of a serious crash or other emergency that leaves him or her unable to communicate. The program is free and available to residents with a valid Virginia driver’s license, identification card, learner’s permit, commercial driver’s license, or temporary driver’s license. We are happy to announce that the Virginia Housing Coalition (VHC) and the Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness (VCEH) have officially merged and launched the Virginia Housing Alliance (VHA). VHA will focus on expanding affordable housing opportunities and ending homelessness through advocacy, education, and collaboration. By merging, VHC and VCEH have created a stronger and more sustainable organization. The first day of the New Year brought out hundreds of families to breath fresh air and discover Pocahontas State Park for the First Day Hike. Celebrating their 80th anniversary in 2016 of the Virginia State Park system, there were a number of ways to participate for those interested in self-guided opportunities, geocaching, discovering the parks newly created tree I.D., trails and or visiting the Nature Center, CCC Museum and the front office.
