The Chesterfield County School Board will review staff proposals to close a $23.3 million funding gap that now exists in the Board’s approved Fiscal Year 2021 operating budget based on reductions in funding recently announced by state and local governments. Chesterfield County Public Library is donating fabric masks to a women’s shelter and 3-D-printed plastic straps for masks to Chippenham Hospital. Library staff made 75 masks and 100 plastic straps using the library’s sewing machines and 3-D printers. The plastic straps are designed to attach to a mask’s elastic ear loops, which relieves the pressure from the wearer’s ears. Library staff are making approximately 100 additional masks to donate to a doctor’s office and a local company. Recently, the library donated 20 fabric masks to a Chesterfield County company.
Virginia State Parks are working toward a goal to reopen campgrounds for Memorial Day weekend. The announcement to allow for the opening of campgrounds came Friday during Gov. Northam’s press conference as part of the state’s Phase One reopening strategy. Gov. Northam announced that while state parks continue to be open for day use, overnight facilities will open following a phased approach beginning with park campgrounds. Guests should check the individual park’s Web site before their visit for the latest updates. Gov. Ralph Northam recently announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved Virginia to receive three Battelle Critical Care Decontamination Systems (CCDS) that can collectively sterilize up to 240,000 units of personal protective equipment (PPE) per day for reuse. The three systems will be operational in the Town of Blacksburg, the City of Newport News, and Chesterfield County within the middle of May. The Battelle CCDS uses a concentrated hydrogen peroxide vapor to decontaminate N95 masks, which can sustain up to 20 decontamination cycles without degrading filtration performance. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to keep utility fees the same in Fiscal Year 2021, which starts July 1.
