The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will present a fun, fact-filled program on pirates at the County Museum on Saturday, July 11. “Pirates: Fact or Fiction” will explore the myths and truths surrounding pirate lore in popular culture.   According to Ryan O’Hallahan, CHSV docent at the museum who will present the program, “Real pirates such as Henry Morgan, Blackbeard and Edward Low were very different from how fictional pirates like Long John Silver, Captain Hook and Jack Sparrow have been depicted.”  He adds, “Our talk will include how pirates lived aboard ship, how they divided their spoils, how they…

The Thomas Dale High School Band traveled to Disney World with the Village News in April, and under the direction of their band leaders, Mr. Steve Barton and Mr. David Holley, the musicians got a professional recording experience at the Walt Disney’s UR Instrumental Studio. They were given music in the Disney World recording studio, which rehearsed, recorded and synced two scenes from the animated blockbuster, “Frozen.”

Recreational opportunities in state parks are endless and easy to see. An entrance fee of five dollars to Pocahontas State Park can entertain a family all day long with scheduled free activities every hour Wednesday through Sunday. World history and human geography teacher Anne Canipe has returned home from San Francisco after a week-long World Project Based Conference in Napa Valley. The R.E.B.  recipient’s story was shared in the Village News June 24 issue detailing how she would be using the $12,000 grant she received for her excellence in teaching. The Village News is following Canipe and her travels over the summer through her blog – annecanipe.wordpress.com.  Her summer travels will continue August 1, as she travels to Japan and China. Fireworks at Fairgrounds July 4 Celebrate our independence with a spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The event, held at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds (across from L.C. Bird High School), includes an activity area for children and special entertainment. Pay Day for Shrek Bermuda District Improvement Fund was used to subsidize the School Board by transferring $5,000 to offset the cost of producing “Shrek The Musical” at Thomas Dale High School. They are called the “Greatest Generation”: those who were born early enough to endure both the depression and World War II. Some of those men and women, who have now lived into their late 80s and 90s and fought in WWII, were honored last week by the Kiwanis Club of Chester. The soldiers were contacted though a sort of network. The folks at Shoosmith landfill are applying for DEQ permission to use the Tarmac rock quarry, once it is completely used up, for additional space to add to their landfill. The quarry could be nonfunctional in a few years once the company takes the last bit of stone they can economically haul out of there. At that point it will make sense, according to Fletcher Kelly, president of Shoosmith to use the quarry for addition fill space. James River Industrial Park officially opened last month with a ribbon cutting ceremony.  James River Contractor will be the first occupant in the 5,000 square foot center that will cater to general contractors and small businesses needing office space.
