In a runaway victory last Tuesday in the 11th Senatorial District, Amanda Chase took down incumbent Steve Martin and Barry Moore. Both Ms. Chase and Mr. Moore were running for office for the first time. Chase overwhelmed Martin who held the Virginia Senate seat since he won the Senate position in a special election in 1994. Chase convinced voters that it was time for Martin to go. She beat Martin by over 1,000 votes in what was considered a low turnout election. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will present a lecture on Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient Joshua Chamberlain at the historic Magnolia Grange House Museum on Saturday, June 20, at noon. According to local historian Jack Bantle who will present the lecture, “Joshua Chamberlain was a college professor in Maine with no military training when he volunteered during the Civil War for the Union Army.  He reached the rank of Brigadier General and was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery at Gettysburg.” At the surrender ceremony for the infantry of Robert E. The Third Thursday concert on June 18 on the Village Green (presented by the Chester Community Association (CCA) will feature Blues Flash, a blues band that plays venues across the region and the state. The band has been together for 10 years, and with its five members cover songs by the blues kings of the U.S. Blues Flash enjoys playing tunes described by its vocalist and harmonic-player, John Howe, as West Coast Jump, a swing blues that has become popular with shaggers. “A good education is the most valuable gift that no one can take from you,” said Jay M. Ipson, Holocaust history lecturer and co-founder of the Virginia Holocaust Museum. Ipson has lectured to thousands over the last 30 years teaching tolerance through education. The 80-year-old Holocaust survivor’s mission in life is to educate and teach adults and new generations of children on the atrocities of the Holocaust, its history and its aftermath so it is not forgotten, thereby preventing the recurrence of genocide in the future anywhere in the world. The Woman’s Club of Chester held its year-end luncheon meeting at the Half Way House and installed new officers for the 2015-2016 year. Over the years, the Chester Community Association (CCA) and Thomas Dale JROTC have fostered a relationship through their efforts in the Chester community. The JROTC teams with CCA volunteers to present ChesterFest every year. This year’s ChesterFest will be held on Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to  5 p.m. Recently, the CCA gave $1,000 to the Thomas Dale JROTC to aid in the numerous programs conducted in and out of school. Chester has come a long way since 1856 when Joseph Snead and Charles Stebbins first began building-up the Chester area as a desirable place to live and get away from the heat of the City of Richmond. In those days the mail came to Chester by train and was dropped at Chester Station (then located at the CSX rail tracks and Curtis Street. The mail was then taken up the hill by wagon. With a focus on “Aqua-Foods Production for the Individual”, Virginia State University’s three-day Fish School begins Wednesday, July 8, and runs through Friday, July 10.  Free and open to the public, the school is designed for anyone interested in growing freshwater fish or shrimp for fun or profit. Morning discussions will feature lectures followed by hands-on group afternoon activities.  Day one topics include fish and freshwater shrimp production, nutrition and water quality. DALE DISTRICT Near the entrance to Falling Creek Middle School (FCMS), Michael Jackson declared his candidacy for the Chesterfield County School Board to represent the Dale District. Mr. Jackson intends to fill the soon-to-be vacant seat to bring about positive change to the schools in the county.  He states that he will seek improvement in all the schools in the area to give students the opportunity to achieve at the highest levels.
