Chester and Meadowdale libraries are taking part in a groundbreaking pilot program within the county to feed hungry children over the summer. The First Lady of Virginia, Dorothy McAuliffe, the Virginia Department of Health and No Kid Hungry are working together to get Virginia’s kids fed. Virginia libraries across the state have joined this project. Chester resident Anne Canipe boarded a plane to San Francisco on Friday beginning her trek around the world.  Well, almost. Canipe loves to travel and she will be clocking a lot of air miles this summer thanks to a $12,000 grant awarded to her from the R.E.B. Foundation through the Community Foundation for her excellence in teaching. The 38-year veteran teacher of world history and human geography was a 2014 recipient for the R.E.B. As it continues to work on filling the gap of the “Moving Forward… the Comprehensive Plan for Chesterfield,” which includes smaller area plans, the Chesterfield County Planning Department planners are drafting the bicycles and trails facility plan, a Phase II implementation. The draft Bikeways & Trails plan is only an advisory plan and according to planners, is only a guide for future development of the facilities. Honeywell Resins and Chemicals last week announced that it has broken ground on its new nylon resins production line at its Chesterfield manufacturing facility on Bermuda Hundred Road, according to Healthcare Packaging Magazine. The state-of-the-art production line will be the only North American source of key food packaging resins. The new production line can produce multiple grades of Honeywell Aegis® nylon 6 resins, as well as copolymer nylon 6/6.6 resins, both of which are used in food packaging films and other applications. The Chester Lions Club has elected new officers for the 2015-16 year. During their only June meeting, the club met at Meadowbrook Country Club for the installation of those officers. Joey McCaffrey from the Hopewell Lions did his usual outstanding job with the actual installation per the Lions’ international guidelines. The guest speaker was Dr. Ivan Perkinson, twin brother of Dr. W. Baxter Perkinson of Richmond. Ivan’s doctorate is from a seminary, while his twin’s is in dentistry. Local teens from Chesterfield and the surrounding area may sign up to be volunteers at Pocahontas State Park during Teen Volunteer Week, July 6 to 10. Young folks looking to get started or to continue in volunteering, desiring experience working outdoors in a Virginia State Park and looking to fulfill community service hour requirements for high school and college applications may want to apply for this program. Henricus Historical Park has officially unveiled the details of the inaugural Hops in the Park Harvest Festival that will take place on November 14. Proud grandmother and Chester resident Nancy B. Woolridge recently celebrated the accomplishments of her two grandsons. Woolridge’s grandsons Bob and Jack Krudewig were awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on June 6. Bob completed the requirements in August 2012 and Jack completed the requirements in June 2014, but they opted to celebrate the achievement together. Both are members of Boy Scout Troop 613, sponsored by First Lutheran Church in Longview, TX. Bob attends Tarleton University in Stephensville, TX. Jack will attend the University of Colorado, Boulder in the fall.

Nearly 50 youth archers, ages 8-20, participated in the Junior Olympic Archer Development Club (JOAD) Summer Kick-Off Tournament held recently sponsored by Chesterfield Golden Arrow Archers (CGAA). James Hagen Jessee came in first in the Basic Compound Bowman Male division with a total score of 391 points. Several members of his family attended the tournament, including his brother Eric Christopher, who was very proud of his brother’s accomplishment but also very happy himself as he was celebrating his 13th birthday.
