Police Athletic League up and running, will host football camp Saturday

Building lasting relationships with youth is Rick Cremonese’s goal. Cremonese, a master officer with Chesterfield Police Department, helped start a Police Athletic League pilot program last year. The program has blossomed into a full-blown one this year, and the Chesterfield Police Athletic League has held an event each month for children ages 5-17. Committee to study body camera funding

A committee is scheduled to consider what to do about funding commonwealth’s attorneys for reviewing body camera footage from law enforcement officials. The recently-passed state budget contains that language, Chesterfield County officials say. A committee that is to be created from representatives from the state Supreme Court, state Department of Criminal Justice Services, commonwealth’s attorneys, local governments and others is charged with making a recommendation to the state House Appropriations and Senate Finance committee chairs by Dec. 1. Jones is ‘Business Person of the Year’

Keith Jones has been named the Snead-Stebbins Business Person of the Year by the Chester Business Association. Jones was honored at the organization’s annual cookout, which was held June 21 at the home of Jim and Robin Daniels. The award was named in honor of Joseph Snead and Charles Stebbins, who founded Chester in 1856. Jones was chosen for the award based on his business success and charitable service, CBA board member Jim Daniels said. Fourth of July celebrations

The Chesterfield County Fairgrounds will be the site of a Fourth of July event this year from 5-9 p.m., and Fort Lee will host a musical event starting at 5:15 p.m. with fireworks to begin at 9:35 p.m. The fairgrounds, located at 10300 Courthouse Road across from L.C. Bird High School, will have a spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The event includes an activity area for children, food vendors and special entertainment. Dual language learning programs approved at two elementaries

Dual Language Immersion is coming to two Chesterfield elementary schools following approval by the governing board on June 12. Elizabeth Scott Elementary will begin offering a Spanish language immersion program for one kindergarten class this fall. The students will be chosen by lottery. They will be taught math, science and health in Spanish and language arts and social sciences in English. All Elizabeth Scott students will continue to have 45 minutes a week of instruction in Spanish, according to Thomas Taylor, the district’s chief academic officer.
