Bike Maintenance 101

CHESTERFIELD, Va. – On Saturday, May 21, the Chester library hosted “Get Your Wheels on the Road,” a bike workshop presented by the Rag & Bones Bicycle Cooperative of Richmond. A volunteer-run shop, located in Scott’s Addition, Rag & Bones offers workshops and public tools, sells affordable bikes, and teaches bike maintenance and safety. The library Saturday program, aimed toward families but welcoming of all, promoted safe riding and “do-it-yourself” bike maintenance, just in time for the upcoming summer months. Matoaca boys tennis swept the Conference 12 championships this past week. Junior Connor Thomas took home the singles championship, then paired up with freshman Chewon Kim to win the doubles crown. On to regionals!

L.C. Bird Sports Hall of Fame Committee announces 2016 inductees

The following individuals have been selected to join the L.C. Bird Sports Hall of Fame for 2016. They are: Brett Mietus, All-State football; Bill Carnahan, basketball; Justin Gorman, All-State baseball; Caroline Stolle, softball; Walter Gilliam, retired assistant football coach; and Jim Watters, retired football defensive coordinator and assistant track coach. Introductions will be made at the Bird-Manchester home football game on September 16, with an induction ceremony to be held on Saturday, September 17, at the Highlands Golf Club. Basketball Skills Camp held at Bird June 20-24

L. C. Bird Basketball Skills Camp 2016 has been scheduled for June 20-24 for girls six through 16. The camp will be held Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Friday. Camp will be held at Lloyd C. Bird High School. Campers should be prepared with a T-shirt, shorts, and basketball shoes. Campers may bring a bag lunch or purchase lunch for $3. Lunch for purchase will include sandwich/pizza, chips/fruit and drink. Free Concert featuring BreakPoint at Chester Presbyterian Church

A free concert featuring BreakPoint, host band for the 2016 South Chesterfield Relay for Life, will take place Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Chester Presbyterian Church located at the corner of West Hundred and Osborne roads. Local talent will also be featured, as will special guest vocalists Melissa Hetzler Burton of Zachariah Song and Kelly Lee Wachner of Mama – Jauna playing tunes from Coldplay, Zac Brown, Train, Bill Withers, and many more. Donations will be accepted for Chester Presbyterian Church for ministries and missions.

In the early days before career firefighters were employed by local governments, volunteer fire departments formed and became the hub of a community. Not only did volunteers respond to a fire, they organized fund raisers and community events. The auxiliary units organized the events as well as provided food and drinks for firefighters responding to calls. They brought their neighbors together with a mission and a passion to protect their community.
