Chesterfield County has named Andrew G. Gillies as its new planning director. County leaders selected Gillies after a national recruitment process. He is currently the community services director for Farmers Branch, a suburb of Dallas, Texas. Having worked for more than 30 years in the planning and community development field, Gillies brings a wide range of experience to Chesterfield County. Over his career, Gillies has worked primarily for Texas municipalities; however, he served as the executive director for a large city-county planning commission in Kentucky for seven years. A bastion of suburban life in the 1970s, Chesterfield County began its climb in population just under 80,000 in 1970 to around 340,000 today. An unprecedented growth rate of 8.3 percent in building permits during the ’70s has yet to be surpassed in the 37 years since. Some of the neighborhoods built in the years Chesterfield was growing now need a little attention, and a new County department is being formed to address the issues of aging neighborhoods. It can be easy to identify some of the areas that need revitalization, such as the Jefferson Davis Highway, lower Hull Street…
Barney McLaughlin, has proposed a 16-unit townhome development that would be located at 4513 Lee Street and is currently owned by William “Bill” Graves. McLaughlin plans to build 17 units, which will be for sale. He says maintenance and landscaping will be part of a maintenance fee that homeowners would pay to keep their homes looking new and fresh into the future. It is always a concern that these types of units can be sold in the future and that the next owner may not pay attention to the unit as the original buyer did. McLaughlin said that it is…

Chesterfield is buying into the idea of pedestrian access for citizens across the county. Old Centralia Road is slated for a sidewalk from Castlebury Drive to Glen Oaks Court. Sidewalks have already been constructed on Cogbill, Osborne, and Harrowgate roads. Old Centralia and Osborne roads have had partial sidewalks for years, but they end abruptly; some calling them sidewalks to nowhere. But a movement inspired by safety, health issues, and connectivity is driving the need for more pedestrian amenities. The Old Centralia Road sidewalk when completed will be about a half mile. The Chesterfield Department of Transportation (CDOT) has procured…
Health minded kayakers or canoe paddlers learn their chops touring the Farrar Gut backwater at Dutch Gap. But recent findings by citizens group, Hands Across the Lake, indicate that the old James River channel (used before the Dutch Gap Canal was built during the Civil War) could be contaminated with heavy metals. Although Dominion Virginia Power disputes the findings that arsenic, chromium, and lead are among heavy metals are well below the standards set by the EPA and DEQ. Chesterfield County Duputy Administrator William Dupler said the effluent is not released into Farrar Gut released only upstream from Dutch Gap…

Extending to the height of a proposed indoor storage building, a test balloon will be flying above a property on the corner of Old West Hundred and West Hundred roads on June 9 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. with a rain date on June 10. The building’s exterior is proposed to look much like an office building. The proposed building has not yet been approved by the Chesterfield Planning Commission or Board of Supervisors, but a homeowner south of the project, Charity Howard and Gloria Charity, said they are okay with how the proposed building would be obscured from…
Chester could get a new building at the entrance to Chester Village at the intersection of West Hundred Road and Old West Hundred Road. The proposed building would be called Chester Mini Storage and contain 500 interior storage units. The exterior of the building would look like an office building. The property where the proposed building would be built on is 3.4 acres. A buffer (native trees and bushes) would equal about 50 feet at the rear and west sides and five feet along West Hundred Road. The five feet is proposed due to the wide right of way that…
