Spiderman stepped aside so Darth Vader could get through the milling crowd. At the check-out desk of the Meadowdale Library, Princess Leia scanned books for patrons. Stormtroopers, super heroes, and all kinds of characters one could imagine wondered about. It was the Meadowdale Library annual Comic Con and the community responded by attending by the hundreds. The event not only gave one the opportunity for “Cosplay,” the art of dressing up as a character from a movie, book or video game, but vendors of many kinds were on hand with items such as graphic novels, comic books, food and more.…

In a historic first for the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, the world of the traditional classical symphony orchestra will merge with the modem combination of electric guitars, bass, vocals, and rhythm sets as the Chester-based variety band, Outside the Wire, joins with the 55-member Petersburg Symphony Orchestra in its 5th annual Cabaret event on Saturday, Feb. 18. This collaboration was the brainchild of PSO member Larry Lyles. Since 2014, he has been the music director for Chester-based Trigate Productions, partnering with company president and producer Lee McDowell and his son, program director Brandon McDowell. With the creation of Trigate’s most recent…

Eyes were sparkling and grins were wide on the 2,000 children who gathered for El Juguetazo, a celebration of the Epiphany held Jan. 14, at L.C. Bird High School. “A snowstorm caused a delay for the annual event, originally scheduled for Jan. 7,” said Juan Santacoloma, Multicultural Liaison for Chesterfield County. The event provides at least one new toy for each child in a low-income family. In the Bible, the Three Kings Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar, visited the baby Jesus bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Volunteers representing the Three Kings give gifts to the children. For many in…

RICHMOND – Sean, 25, didn’t socialize much in high school, but respite weekends at the Greater Richmond ARC’s Camp Baker in Chesterfield now give him the chance. Sean truly enjoys his time with his Camp Baker buddies, according to his mom Teresa, who says it is a safe place where he gets a break from his daily household routine. Sean would be a “sadder, more moody person” without Camp Baker respite, she says. “It’s given him a sense of independence where he’s doing things on his own.” The Greater Richmond ARC’s Camp Baker will provide weekend respite for children and…

Each year we search for ideas, scraping the inside of our giving hearts for what type of sweater to purchase for Johnny and what size skinny jeans Jenny wears. Some of us spend doing things like inviting someone less fortunate into our home for a Christmas meal. The local wreath-laying ceremony honoring deceased veterans, part of the Annual Wreath Across America Day program, was held Saturday at Sunset Memorial Park. The cold, gray, and rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of over 100 volunteers who arrived to attend the eremony and assist in the wreath laying. Coach Paul Amos…

By Barbara McHale Miss Lucy Corr came to Chesterfield County in 1945 to serve as Superintendent of the Welfare Department. Realizing that many families did not have the means to celebrate the holidays, she and her small staff volunteered their time collecting food, toys, clothing, and monetary donations to help those in need. “Miss Lucy” relied on the police chief for support in delivering food and gifts to families in Chesterfield and Colonial Heights. Another wonderful afternoon at the Chester Kiwanis Christmas Parade! The annual parade drew many spectators. Dorothy Jaeckle served as the Grand Marshal leading 73 groups that included floats, cars, dancers, horses, bands and more. Joe Schetting was the master of ceremony at the parade that represented local businesses, churches and organizations in the community. A special thank you to the Chester YMCA, JT Morriss, Chick-fil-A, and the Chester Library for allowing us use of their parking lots for staging/disbanding the parade participants. Also, thanks to Heritage Chevrolet many floats were able to use their cars during the parade and County…
