He came to us from a place called Spanish Fort, which is located along the Red River, on the Texas/Oklahoma border. You may say, how did we find someone there to come and lead our revival services? While the humid heat of summer is ablaze, Chester native Sarah Perkinson will board a plane, embarking on an 11-month trip that will take her around the world. Back in October of 2015, Perkinson, a graduate student at Liberty University majoring in elementary and secondary education, applied to be a participant of the World Race, a program through Adventures in Missions. Her hopes quickly became reality when she was accepted just two days after submitting her application. The winners of the 33rd annual Outstanding Youth Awards were honored recently at a ceremony at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center @ Hull. The awards recognize young people and adults who have had a positive impact on their schools, communities or in the lives of other individuals. Youths receive awards in the categories of courage, compassion and service. Forty youths and nine adults were nominated this year. The youth nominees represented eight high schools and three middle schools. Red Cross Club community clean-up

Each March, the Matoaca High School Red Cross Club chooses a family requiring assistance with outdoor yard maintenance. This year the club assisted a Chesterfield resident removing leaves and other debris from their yard and flower beds. Working in such perfect weather, three hours later, the club managed to fill 89 large leaf bags for pickup at the curb. The club takes pride in a community service project well done.

RoboHawks are victorious

RoboHawks robotics team of L. C. Bird High School won the Virginia first robotics district competition March 13 in Blacksburg and also received the “Gracious Professionalism” award for helping other teams fix their robots. Next stop for the RoboHawks is the district championships April 9 and 10 at the University of Maryland. L.C. Bird High School is the specialty center for the Governor’s Academy for Engineering Studies.

Shelley Pearsall visited students at Falling Creek Middle School last week. Students have been reading two of her books: “All of the Above,” the third book that she wrote and “The Seventh Most Important Thing,” her most recent publication. Most of her books for juveniles are at least 250 pages. A former teacher and museum historian, Pearsall is now a full-time author.
