The only way to access the Brown and Williamson Conservation Area in Enon, a site donated by the tobacco company to Chesterfield County, is by a Parks and Recreation tour. Parks and Recs is offering a trek, Saturday, Jan. 26, according to Mark Battista, naturalist for the County. The tour will start at the vernal pool along the southern border, Drop down into a big hollow and follow the stream. Latin music filled the air with festivity, children giggled and smiled in a long line that snaked around the room at L.C. Bird High School. They excitedly waited for the three kings to arrive at the “El Juguetazo” or “Three Kings Day” event last Saturday. The volunteers were smiling too, as they busily readied the toys donated by businesses and caring individuals to be handed out. Three Kings Day is celebrated by many in the Hispanic communities in remembrance of the Three Wise Men who traveled to the nativity bearing gifts. The gifts at the event are given to children…

The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will present a lecture at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 30 at the County Museum, 6813 Mimms Loop, in Chesterfield. Ryan O’Hallahan, Chesterfield County Museum staff member and graduate history student at Virginia Commonwealth University, will discuss the experiences of women during the Civil War. Topics will include: women in camp during the war, women spies, nursing and how the war changed women’s roles in the workplace during and after the war. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) presented its ninth annual “Winter Lecture Series” in Chesterfield on January 8. The series continues every second Friday through March 18, 2016. Each lecture begins at 7 p.m. On January 22, Sean Edwards, historic interpreter at Henricus Historical Park will discuss “Virginia Indians’ Reaction to Colonial Contact.” The third lecture, on February 5, entitled, “The Many Faces of Van Lew,” will discuss Richmond abolitionist, philanthropist and spy Elizabeth Van Lew. Local resident, Linda Bowling, and her classmates are very passionate about extending an invitation to the community to learn American Sign Language (ASL) and about the deaf culture. “It is free,” she said. “The knowledge we are gaining from the class is helping us to close the gap between the hearing and non-hearing cultures. To see a hearing impaired person’s expression of happiness when a hearing person communicates with them is rewarding.” American Sign Language classes are being offered at the Appomattox Regional Library in Hopewell.
